Mozy
Sometime ago, I did a survey asking “Do you make backup copies?”. The result was negatives; most of users didn’t do any backups. I guess that if was asking only home user the result would be even worst. But better later, that never. Today I will review one of online backup service.Why online backup? Because those services practically speaking comply all main requirements for safe backup copies: accessible always on online server with safe OS (often with UNIX/LINUX), which isn’t on the same room or house. This means that in case of disaster (fire, flood, tornado, etc) your date will still be safe.
Earlier thoughts that is not secure to trust your sensitive data to third parts didn’t prove. A lot of backup copies services work online for long years, but I didn’t heard any bigger problems. Other thing, most of those services providers use automatic encryption with Blowfish or other algorithms. So if you have nothing to hide from government, that security must be enough.
So today I tested one of the online backup’s services – Mozy , which have a lot of needed features:
- Automatic copying with installed peace of software
- Can choose from continually and periodical backup process
- Can backup and restore data which in removable devices
- 2 GB space for free, unlimited cost you 5 $ month.
- Information encrypted with 448 bit Blowfish key
- Uploading encrypted with 128 bit SSL
The 2 GB free space is enough for starters if we talk about documents. Because of automatic backup process you can even forget about that duty and still you information will be safe. This is very important, because routine backup process suffer from laziness or out of time.
The downloaded Mozy software is easy to download and start using. The restore is a bit complicated. You can do it in two ways. From the Mozy website or from Mozy Virtual Backup drive in My Computer. Restoring through website is a long process, but you receive email when it’s done with URL. The files are also zipped for faster downloading. From my computer the restore process is faster and easier, in my opinion.
The synchronization process is still open question for me. I think Mozy overwrite file every time, which is bad, backuping only new or changed file will safe my traffic and will much faster. And there is no version of changed file. Also if you delete the file on you PC, it will disappear from Mozy also.
