Avira AntiVir
Avira AntiVir is free antivirus software standing in one line with others such as: Avast, AVG and ClamWin.
Avira promise to protect my computer from mo than 80’000 virus threats, including Trojan horses, worms, dialers and other dangerous trash, also know as Malware or malicious software). There are three versions of Avira Antivir:
PersonalEdition Classic - which are free of charge for personal use,
PersonalEdition Premium - which cost 20 EURO and
Avira Premium Security Suite - witch cost 39.95 EURO but promise all round protection from internet threads such as spyware and andware, antiphishing and antispam. Firewall also included in this version.
I will test the free one – PersonalEdition Classic.
Downloading and installation of free Avira Antivirus is easy, with out any unnecessary registrations forms and questions. The version I downloaded (7.00.04.15) was 17 MB in size and took only about few minutes to install. And no computer restart, hurray. System Requirements: Min. 20 MB free RAM, 30 MB free on your hard drive, additional memory for quarantine, min. 100 MB temporary hard drive memory for data handling. Administration rights for installation on Windows NT, 2000 and XP.
After installation I was asked to updated virus signatures from internet. What is very nice, because as soon I have newest virus signatures, my antivirus will be able to recognize new malware, right? Wrong! After five minutes of trying to update, Avira antivirus told me that there is no internet connection. Nice runaround but I there is.
The user interface clear and easy and I think understandable for both novice and power users. At first I miss the big simple "Scan now" button, which I hope to find in all antivirus software. But the button is here in “Scaner” section. Also there is easy possibility to make a desktop shortcut with selected scan options.
All other antivirus things are also available and easy accessible: Quarantine, Scheduler, Reports and Events. What I missed is email scanning. Now days when the biggest part of virus coming from emails, avira antivirus doesn’t scan email and attachments? When in configuration turned on Expert mode, there are Email tab, but only for SNTP server (for sending mail). Maybe it’s scanning “on the fly” when you try to open the infected file?
I’ll continue to test Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic for other two weeks and let you know about the result. I hope it's only temporarily problems with their virus signatures updates servers, and more like exception than normal practice with free service.
Don’t agree with me or have something more to add? Write it to comments.
And remember there is no such thing as 100% protection (security), but any working antivirus is better than no antivirus at all.
